Many staff are double/triple rostered. Many PE/Library/VAPA teachers work at more than one school and are probably being double/triple counted. I've seen this mistake show up for the total teachers at the school where I work. This was the explanation I received.
Is this a new problem? Double/triple rostering has been standard practice for years, I believe, so it can't by itself explain the increase over the last two years. Something must have changed in that timeframe. It's certainly plausible that Empower is double-counting double-rostered staff.
You're probably aware of this already but, in case you're not, Transparent California aggregates pay and benefits totals for many government employers, including SFUSD. The info for SFUSD only goes up to 2023. I think the totals are for the calendar year, but I'm not sure.
I guess you could file a PRA request with SFUSD for the 2024 totals.
Thanks. Transparent California is useful if you want to know how much particular people earn but it wouldn't be helpful in this particular case because there's no way to know whether those employees are certificated or not and management or not.
The overstaffing is in Central Office. When you compare SF to Long Beach (difference in student enrollment is minimal) ... so SFUSD has 26 lawyers and Long Beach has 6, there is a chart comparing them. Matt Alexander has a chart comparing these 2 districts. It was made public on the internet about 2 years ago.
The cronyism of Central Office should not affect working salaries nor retiree health benefits.
Another problem is the # of Administrators. At some point (maybe currently) 2 middle schools with 700 or less students had 2 Admin. In addition, there are Principals who have only taught for one year and not an academic class; that should be a no no.
So, if we reduce the # of bodies in Central Office and the unnecessary Principals and Asst Principals we can increase teacher's salaries.
I believe Maria Su has said that closures are off the table for two years. That means the next time they could be on the table in late 2026 and the earliest they could take effect would be 2027-28.

Thank you for your write ups! Do you expect school closures in 2026-27?
